But... but... I thought winning internet-wide contests was just something that happened to other people!
A couple months back, Greater than Games held a contest to see who could design the best villain. The winning submission would be included in the next expansion to their superhero-themed card game, Sentinels of the Multiverse. I figured, Hey, I've got nothing to lose, it relates to game design—my major— and, if on the off chance I do win, I'll be able to say on my resume that I contributed to an actual award-winning game! Plus, if I don't enter, I might spend the rest of my life wondering what would've happened if I had. Not that I'm actually GOING to win, but with such a relatively small pool of contestants I have a good chance. Plus, it sounds fun. What the heck, I'll give it a try!
So I made up a villain I thought could be an interesting take on the next expansion's theme, time travel and alternate realities. After I developed the idea to the point where I had something I liked, I started to think that if I went above and beyond with this thing, I just might
win. Short summary and a drawing isn't enough! I'll make an ENTIRE COMIC about the character!!!! I have a month until the contest ends, that's plenty
Of course, all of that extra time was spent goofing off and doing some sort of "going back to college" thing, and in the end, all I could submit was a summary of my villain and a drawing of her. Ah, well. I did what I could, but it's probably not good enough to win.
I didn't give the contest much thought after that.
However, one month later, I got an excited text from a friend saying that someone named Alex had won the contest. I cautiously checked my e-mail, and found a message that began like this:
Good morning! How are you? I'm writing this e-mail to tell you that, of all the 214 entries I received for the Create a Villain contest, I have chosen your entry into a character in our upcoming Shattered Timelines expansion...I am very eager to work with you on this character. I've worked her over thoroughly in the last couple weeks, after having narrowed the villain entries down to three and working through each of them to determine which excited me the most.
Suffice to say I am really excited and feeling much more confident in my abilities!eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
